In the battle for last place in the entire NHL, there can be only one worst team out of thirty. Such was the case at the Pepsi Center on Monday night as the Colorado Avalanche did battle with their own ghosts as well as the second worst team in the league, the visiting Calgary Flames.
Allowing yourself to be down and out, complacent, mentally vacant even for a few days after blowing a 4-1 lead against the Edmonton Oilers would almost be expected. Facing a 56-shot barrage to lose the game in regulation would be devastating to many in the NHL.
Despite giving up the first goal of the game, the Colorado Avalanche battled back against a red-hot Phoenix Coyotes, taking the game into overtime before falling to the visiting club 3-2 at Pepsi Center on Monday night.
“It’s painful right now. Same story every night, we’re bringing it five on five and playing well five on five but we can’t seem to find a win in those games. It’s the same story. We’ve got to figure out a way to score. It’s the bottom line,” said Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene after the club’s most recent loss, 3-0, to the visiting Anaheim Ducks.
Could this be the Denver Cutthroats team that Head Coach Derek Armstrong has been telling us about since open tryouts in August? It certainly appeared that way as the home team hit their stride against the Fort Worth Brahmas tonight, winning 6-1 in the second of back-to-back games at the Denver Coliseum.
