At the end of the 2011-12 hockey season, Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene was an enigma. He managed only 28 points in 58 games, suffered multiple injuries, and was largely out-shined by teammate and fellow 2009 draft pick Ryan O’Reilly. As fans clamored for O’Reilly to inherit the Avalanche captaincy, Duchene was left wondering how he ended up so far away from the 67 points he saw the year before.
He signed a two-year “bridge” deal that summer, using a low salary number as motivation to prove to himself and the club that he could do better in just two years.
While many teams around the NHL were going all in on the first day of free agency, signing big names and making trades to fill gaping holes in the roster, the Colorado Avalanche were quietly rounding out their organizational needs.
The rise and fall of the stock of a top ranked prospect comes with the territory of being the best at what you do. One injury, one dry stretch, a couple of off games and you’re no longer at the top. A handful of good nights, a few hat tricks, a comparison to Sidney Crosby and you’re jumping over the guy ahead of you.
