I had been to a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises the night before and spent the wee hours of the morning watching with horror as the Aurora news unfolded before succumbing to exhaustion.

Hard work pays off for Avalanche center Matt Duchene

At the end of the 2011-12 hockey season, Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene was an enigma. He managed only 28 points in 58 games, suffered multiple injuries, and was largely out-shined by teammate and fellow 2009 draft pick Ryan O’Reilly. As fans clamored for O’Reilly to inherit the Avalanche captaincy, Duchene was left wondering how he ended up so far away from the 67 points he saw the year before.

He signed a two-year “bridge” deal that summer, using a low salary number as motivation to prove to himself and the club that he could do better in just two years.

NEWARK, N.J. — The Colorado Avalanche continued their strong draft selections well into the New Jersey evening, scooping up one forward, one goalkeeper, and five defensemen during the entirety of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. While rounds one (first overall) and two (32nd overall) went relatively slowly, the later choices cruised by at lightning speed.
